Triangle met Larne Youth who had gone the whole season undefeated, at Cloyne Crescent to decide who would be Shield champions.
Larne started as clear favourites to take the title but they had not bargained on a battling performance for the Coleraine outfit. The game got underway and from the first whistle the two teams tried to get the upper hand. A solid performance by all the boys saw the first half finish scoreless, the best chances having fallen to Triangle.
The second half took the same pattern as the first. A good gritty display saw Triangle take the lead when Takunda Matsvimbo used his pace to outstrip the Larne defence and slot the ball past the keeper. Larne equalised, but the Triangle heads remained high with a determination to retain the trophy they had won the previous year. This determination brought about the second goal when a great effort from Steven Doherty came back off the bar, Takunda was the most alert and he controlled the ball off his chest and fired high into the net. Triangle were back in front and very close to winning the game. More chances fell to Triangle but the impressive Grant Lynas and Takunda saw their efforts go inches past the woodwork. Despite stout defensive work Larne again equalised with a low bobbling shot beating the keeper. The half was to see no more twists and the whistle blew for full time.
With this being a cup final the game had to be decided and therefore extra time was needed. With a fading light this was only set at five minutes each way. Both halves saw no further scores and so to the Penalty shootout.
Five brave souls put their names forward to take the kicks and Max Moore-Wilson had the task of saving those from Larne. Larne took the first 1-0, Triangle scored theirs 1-1, Max saved the Larne second kick 1-1, Triangle scored the second 1-2, Larne scored 2-2,Triangle hit the bar 2-2, Larne scored again 3-2, Triangle notched another 3-3, Max saved the final Larne effort 3-3, Triangle scored the fifth 3-4 and won the game.
Final score Larne 5 Triangle 6 after extra time and penalties.
A great performance from the entire side of Max Moore-Wilson, Scott Deeny, Jamie Armstrong, Che Bradley, Chris Kane, Simon Cameron, Steven Doherty, Ruari Quinn, Luke Bradley, Grant Lynas, Takunda Matsvimbo, Connor Donnelly, Justin Cassels, Nathan Kelly.
Man of the match went to Takunda Matsvimbo.
