Developing Grass Roots Football in the Triangle Area

The initiative is being run through an exciting new partnership between the University of Ulster, Coleraine and Coleraine Football Club with the support of the Coleraine Youth League.

Triangle Soccer School, Bertie Peacock F.C, East End F.C, Tullans F.C and Riada Soccer School all entered teams into the 6 week league programme targeting primary school children with Coleraine Football Club players on hand to referee the games and meet the young players.  So far Kyle McVeigh, Darren Boyce, John Neil, Ryan McLaughlin, Stuart Callaghan & Stephen Carson have volunteered to referee, helping to make this truly enjoyable experience for all involved.

Further information on the league programme can be obtained from the UUC Sports Development Team by contacting Keith Thompson on Tel: 028 703 23263, E-mail: k.thompson1@ulster.ac.uk.

U.U.C 7-a-side Youth Soccer League

Contributing to grass roots football in the triangle area

The University of Ulster at Coleraine Youth Soccer Friendship League drew to a close last week after 6 weeks of friendly, yet semi-competitive football.

Triangle Soccer School, Bertie Peacock F.C, East End F.C, Tullans F.C and Riada Soccer School all entered teams into the 6 week league programme targeting primary school children.

The idea behind the league was to offer the local soccer clubs the opportunity to enter there younger players into a semi-competitive fixtures in order to aid their development.  Each Friday night the youths aged between 7 – 11 years old came together to represent their club in a fun and highly spirited environment created at the U.U.C sports pitches.

The young players were supported by coaches and parents who turned out on a regular basis to watch and were very lucky to enjoy hot sunny weather on at least 4 out of the 6 nights.  Although their was no overall winners or prizes up for grabs the youths played to the best of their ability and done themselves proud.

Coleraine Football Club played a major part in the league by providing a host of players including the likes of Kyle McVeigh, Ryan McLaughlin & Stephen Carson to referee.  This provided the young players with an opportunity to meet the Coleraine players and get their photo taken with them.

The U.U.C Sports Development Unit hope that this is just the start of many youth soccer initiatives to come onto the campus over the coming months and indeed years as they feel they can play a key role in supporting the local youth soccer clubs.

Further information on the league programme can be obtained from the UUC Sports Development Team by contacting Keith Thompson on Tel: 028 703 23263, E-mail: k.thompson1@ulster.ac.uk.
