Triangle v 18th Newtownabbey

Under 16’s stay ahead of the pack

With another Saturday of dreadful weather cancelling matches Triangle U16’s were fortunate to have their game go ahead. 18th Newtownabbey were the opposition and the Coleraine side had the luck of the high wind on their backs to begin with. Several chances were missed and it wasn’t until fifteen minutes when Richard Walker cut in on the left hand side on the eighteen yard line to open the scoring. Triangle struck again within five minutes with a Richard Walker cross which was toe poked home by Vinnie Henneghan. Vinnie added his second with a strike from the edge of the box soon after. The just before half time Richard Walker shot also from the edge of the box. This time the Newtownabbey keeper parried it away but not far enough, Karl McKillop toe poked it home to make the half time score 4-0 to Triangle.

Triangle then had to endure the wind and under pressure with several 18th Newtownabbey corners they conceded their only goal of the match. On the break Triangle Glenn Young added Triangle’s fifth and finally the sixth goal came from a well worked movement on the right hand side courtesy of Glenn Young, Richard Moffat and Johnny Thompson. Overall a good during some terrible playing conditions.

Triangle v Chimney Corner

With rain cancelling matches in all leagues the final decision rested with the team managers of Triangle and Chimney Corner. The team having travelled all the way to Newtownabbey for the game decided to go ahead even though the rain kept on coming. Triangle went one down early on from a long range kick from the opposition’s right back. The ball went right through to Triangle’s keeper, the wet conditions left him slipping the ball and the Chimney Corner centre forward capitalised and scored. Ten minutes later and Triangle were awarded a penalty when Aaron Duffy was brought down, he scored the equaliser with a low shot into the corner of the net. Just before half time Craig McKillop just missed scoring from a cross by Glenn Young.

The second half saw Triangle with the wind on their backs, a free kick just inside the opposition’s half taken by Johnny Thompson saw the ball carried on the wind and bounce in front of the advancing keeper. The ball bounced too high from him to collect and found the back of the net. Triangle were now in the lead which then did not relinquish. The Coleraine boys were now in control and five minutes later Vinnie Henneghan clinched the third. Richard Walker secured the fourth with a 30 yard strike into the top of the net. Soon after Harvey Webber crossed from the right and Richard Walker headed in. Richard clinched his hat trick in the last minutes to leave the final score 6-1 to Triangle.

Triangle v 18th Newtownabbey

Triangle clashed with 18th Newtownabbey in their latest league game. The Coleraine side played an under par game throughout but still managed to dominate. At the fifteen mark the boys took the lead with a ball from Craig McKillop who passed to Vinnie Henneghan. Vinnie took the shot but it was parried away by the goalkeeper, luckily Richard Walker was at hand to power the ball into the net. Ten minutes later and 18th Newtownabbey equalised from a corner but before half time Vinnie took the lead for Triangle, 2-1. The second half saw Triangle continue to dominate but saw their lead eroded again from a corner and a rare goal keeping error. A short time later Triangle were awarded a free kick near the box and were then awarded a penalty after a handball was noted by the referee. Vinnie stepped up to the mark to let Triangle take the lead again, 3-2. Vinnie then finished by claiming his hat-trick and the final goal, 4-2 Triangle.

Triangle v Larne Colts

Under 16’s even stevens
Triangle faced mid table Larne Colts this week in the East Antrim Youth League. The side began strongly
and within two minutes was 1-0 up through play down the right side where Harvey Webber passed to Peter
Hodge, Hodge stepped over the ball and then Craig McKillop pushed out to Richard Moffat who shot from
twelve yards into the roof of the net. Larne then began to push Triangle back but the Coleraine side made use
of the space and caught the Larne boys on the break, sadly Peter Hodge shot wide. Larne Colts kept the pressure
on and were rewarded with an equaliser fifteen minutes before the break. The second half saw the Larne team
take the lead but the Coleraine boys kept on the ball and good team play from Paul Wells who distributed well to
Richard Moffat the ball then went up the line to Glen Young who pushed inside to Hodge, he in turn flicked to
Richard Walker who drove the ball from eighteen yards into the corner of the net. The Coleraine boys had the
upper hand and scored their third when Vinnie Henneghan lobbed the keeper from the eighteen yard line. Sadly
the Larne side equalised with five minutes to go to leave the final score 3-3. Special mention to the Triangle
defence of Aaron Duffy, Johnny Thompson and Paul Wells

Triangle v Whitehead

Whitehead was in the Under 16s sights this week and the Coleraine side
went into cruising mode. The game began and within five minutes a long
clearance from the Whitehead goalkeeper was picked up by a Whitehead
striker who converted with a beautiful goal. Five more minutes elapsed
before Triangle began the goal rout which left the boys 5-1 up at half
time. The second half saw Owen Daley and Russell Smith come on for
Peter Hodge and Craig McKillop. The scorers on the day were Richard
Walker (4), Peter Hodge (2), Craig McKillop (1), Russell Smith (1),
Vinnie Henneghan (3), Richard Moffat (1) and Owen Daley (1). The win
put Triangle back on top of the East Antrim League Table.

Triangle v Larne Colts

Triangle U16’s took on their closest rivals Larne Colts and came away with the spoils. Within the first ten minutes
the Coleraine side was on top with a couple of half chances being lost. The Colts came into the game and broke the
deadlock when Paul Wells cleared the ball some forty yards out. This was immediately lobbed back to leave
Triangle one down. Triangle were not at their best but with ten minutes to half time Vinnie Henneghan raced down
the line and crossed to Craig McKillop who slide the ball in. The second half was tight and Larne Colts missed a
chance from a corner which went wide at the back post. Richard Walker scored next with a strike from an acute
angle twenty five yards out which hit the top inside of the net. The Coleraine side were now gelling together and
Craig McKillop collected his brace when Richard walker ran the right wing and crossed to Craig who squeezed the
ball home. Triangle were soon caught on the break but were saved embarrassment from the keeper Paul Wells and
Gavin McLean who between them defeated the attack. Fifteen minutes to the final whistle and Harvey Webber won
the ball on the half way line. He found Craig McKillop who in turn passed to Richard Walker who lobbed the Larne
keeper on twenty yards to collect his brace. Final score Triangle 4 Larne Colts 1.

Triangle v 18th Newtownabbey

The best start of the season didn’t make it plain sailing for the Coleraine team up against 18th Newtownabbey at the
weekend. The boys were on form and twenty minutes in saw Vinnie Henneghan deliver a ball thirty yards to Craig
McKillop. Craig brought the ball down with his right foot and lobbed the keeper. Some chances came Triangle’s
way with Richard Walker hitting the post. It was when things were going well the team slackened off and the second
half gave the opposition the upper hand. Ten minutes in and 18th Newtownabbey were rewarded with an equaliser.
Triangle did just enough to stay ahead helped when Richard Moffat cleared off the line. In the last minutes fitness
played its part and as the game slowed Triangle gained a chance to come back. The Coleraine boys were helped by
a mix-up of whistle blowing from a nearby Rugby game and everyone stopped for what was believed to have been
an off-side by Captain Vinnie Henneghan. However the referee signaled play on and quick thinking Henneghan toe
poked in for the winner, 2-1 Triangle.

Triangle v Larne Colts

The Coleraine faced Larne Colts with both teams getting off to a steady start. Triangle soon got into a good pattern of play and began creating chances leaving Paul Wells with little to do. On one attack Scott Hamilton crossed to Craig McKillop who volleyed past the post. Shortly before half time Hamilton again made a great cross, Richard Walker got his head to the ball connected but it went over the bar.  The second half saw Peter Hodge and Gary Hamill who liven up proceedings. Five minutes in and a Scott Hamilton corner was deflected off a Larne defender to make it 1-0. Triangle scored again shortly after when a mix-up between Craig McKillop the Larne goalkeeper and defender left the ball fall to Harvey Webber at twelve yards out. Harvey struck home, 2-0. Triangle continued to dominate and ten minutes more and Hodge pushed the ball out from the six yard line where Hamilton placed the ball beneath the Larne bar. Larne picked up and Triangle slackened off and the sea-siders scored first from a corner and then from a Triangle player losing the ball at the half way line to capitalise and score. Final score 3-2 to Triangle.

Triangle v Whitehead

Triangle U16’s top the league
Triangle FC U16’s continued their winning ways with a win away at Whitehead. The boys dominated the first
half and were rewarded with the first Triangle goal fifteen minutes in courtesy of Richard Walker. Ten minutes
later Glen Young made it 2-0 to the Coleraine side and this should have been the score at half time but for a
dubious penalty award which was converted. The second half saw Whitehead with fresh vigor but Triangle when
Richard Walker had to come off injured, Owen Daley stepped in and within five minutes rewarded the coaches’
decision by scoring the third. Owen finished by setting up Vinnie Henneghan to clinch the final goal of the day.
Final score Triangle FC 4 Whitehead 1.

 Triangle v Templepatrick

Last season’s local Cup and League champions moved this year to the East Antrim League and their opener was against Templepatrick. Triangle started with most of the play and chances but failed to score. The Coleraine boys were punished when they were caught on the break to go one down. Again Triangle were caught out by a long range shot which found them 2-0 down shortly after. Teams which win leagues and cups are made of stern stuff and the comeback began with Richard Walker pushed the ball out to Glen Young on the twelve yard line who tucked it away. Triangle’s second started from a crossed ball to the back post from Scott Hamilton and Richard Walker headed home. The third came courtesy of Vinnie Henneghan who scored by way of a shot from the eighteen yard line. The final Triangle goal shot from outside the box came from Richard Walker. A hectic few minutes saw the Coleraine boys haul themselves back into the winning position. Templepatrick clinched a third in the dying minutes to leave the final score 4-3 to Triangle FC.

Triangle v Co Donegal

Triangle v Colts

On Thursday 2nd August we made the long trip to Donegal Town and we played a friendly match against Co. Donegal team who were in preparation for the Umbro Tournament in Galway. We won this game 4-2 with goals from Craig McKillop who scored in the first minute with a flying header from a cross by Gary Hamill. Donegal then settled and got back into the game they were in peak fitness as it is the middle of their season and we were in pre season training.and we had to work seriously hard to keep them out but they managed to equalise just before the half time break.Whole sale changes made for the next half and again first minute into the half Ruben Hasson scored to put us 2-1up we were in complete control of the game now with Vinnie Henegan putting in another outstanding performance. Richard Walker then made it 3-1 with a rocket from the edge of the box. By now the Donegal teams heads had dropped they really had no answer to the power and pace of our team. Henegan then got his goal another rocket from well outside the box.We started to tire at this stage which was not a surprise and Donegal managed to pull back a late goal to make the score respectable. For being so early in the season Noel and myself were well pleased with the performance.

On Saturday 18th August we entertained Larne Colts U 16 at Rugby Avenue Another hard fought game which we won 4-1. Goals in the first half from Harvey Webber gave us a 1-0 lead at the break. Again changes made at half time and Larne settled better and equalised early into the half and for a short time dominated but could not increase their lead. A good defensive performance from Ben Crawford Brandon Eastwood Aaron Duffy and Richard Moffett ensured that Larne couldnt score. Ryan Doherty then increased Triangles lead with a finish from close range after he was put through by Gavin McClean. Again Vinnie Henegan was outstanding assisted by Ryan Doherty who had missed the trip to Donegal because he was on Milk Cup duty with Co Londonderry team. Aaron Duffy was then taken of his defensive duties and in a change of tactic was sent forward to partner Ryan Doherty. This was one of those managerial master strokes within 5 minutes Aaron had scored with a fine strike from edge of the box. The scoring didn't end there Ryan Doherty was fouled in the area Ben Crawford took the penalty which was put away in style to give the team a deserved 4-1 victory.

These were two good victories against two good teams The hard graft and pre season training made worthwhile Running up the sand dunes on Portstewart Strand. in the Sand Dune Challenges its rewards Ryan Doherty is the currant holder of this award but all challengers welcome.
